Thermally modified timber
After two decades of experience in the market of premium quality aspen and alder moldings and accessories for sauna industry, OSUKALNS SIA is proud to present a new product division- thermal modification of wood.
What is thermal modification?
Thermally modified timber is produced by heating it to temperatures between 180°C and 230°C in absence of oxygen, which dramatically improves the performance of the material. Thermal modification carbonizes free sugars, making wood less hospitable to fungus, therefore increasing biological durability against rot.
Benefits
During thermal modification, resins and extractives are evaporated and physical structure of timber is changed. The ability to absorb moisture is reduced, and further swelling and shrinking in surrounding environment can be reduced up to 60% compared to non-modified timber. The thermal treatment process turns all types of wood to outstanding shades of brown. The color density depends on the variations of the treating class and temperature. It creates an attractive and reliable alternative to less-sustainable tropical hardwoods.
Applications
Stable, durable and lightweight, thermally modified timber products are well suited for various applications such as terraces, decking boards, timber cladding, garden furniture, floorings, bathrooms interiors, saunas and hot tubs. Like untreated wood, thermally modified wood will turn grey when exposed to direct sunlight if installed uncoated, therefore surface coating is recommended for applications where necessary. Additional anti-termite treating is advised where needed.

Our products range thermally modified includes Scandinavian pine and spruce, Radiata pine, aspen, alder, ash and other types of wood of your choice.
